The maternal mortality rate, which is the probability of dying during childbirth or within 42 days of pregnancy termination, is 276 deaths per 100,000 live births in Tanzania, compared to 17 deaths in the United States.

U.S. figures are less comparable to other countries, because reporting changes between 2003 and 2018 doubled the number of maternal deaths captured in official records without an actual doubling in mortality, and coding was revised again in 2018.
