The maternal mortality rate in the United States was 17 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2023 — a 0.02% chance of dying during childbirth or within 42 days of pregnancy termination. This is a 41.7% increase compared to the year 2000.

U.S. figures are not fully comparable over time, because changes in reporting from 2003 to 2018 doubled maternal deaths identified in records without an actual doubling in mortality, and coding was revised again in 2018.

Fertility rate estimates the average number of children a woman would have over her lifetime based on a snapshot of current year age-specific birth patterns.

Birth rate represents the number of live births per 1,000 people in a population during a given year. Unlike the fertility rate, it does not account for age or sex composition of the population.
